“Eat less sugar, you're sweet enough already”. Rub it all over yourself instead.
While sugar is not recommended in large quantities in your diet as it would do more harm than good, recent studies have shown sugar to have a number of beneficial skincare properties. An article by Emilie Davidson for The Huffington Post calls sugar an “excellent ingredient in skincare”.
This article goes on to list the benefits of regularly using a sugar scrub. One of the main reasons that sugar has a plethora of skincare advantages is that it is a natural humectant. This means that it draws in moisture from the environment and allows the skin to capture it. The result? Hydrated and glowing skin with locked in nourishment. An article posted on Nourished Life also suggests that sugar allows the body to retain this nourishment longer than salt scrubs that could also cause small tears in the skin. Salt scrubs may also remove natural oils and clogs pores, hence doing more harm than good.
Glycolic acid is another component of sugar that further breaks down fibers in your skin, increasing the production of fresh, new skin. This results in younger skin. Moreover, sugar scrubs further keep your skin young due to its anti-aging properties.

Olive oil has been a kitchen staple for centuries, and I hope I can convince you to introduce it to your skincare regime. Adding olive oil to your sugar scrub increases the moisture provided. Olive oil, as reported by Allure, has many antioxidants and vitamins A,K,E and D, that work well alongside sugar. While one may think that oils clog your pores, olive oil does not and actually deeply cleanses while moisturizing. Studies also suggest that olive oil reduces the risk of skin cancer.
Hence, while sugar can be toxic to the body if not ingested in moderation, sugar scrubs should definitely be a part of your weekly skincare routine to keep your skin glowing and young with minimal skin damage as opposed to chemical based scrubs.
In the next blog post, I will be sharing with you a simple sugar scrub with only two ingredients! Stay tuned for this awesome and easy fix.
